Hello!

You may have noticed some changes on the walls of Urban Beach recently. These paintings are the work of local artist Bevis Fenner. In order to refresh our wall art we devised a competition on Facebook offering local artists the chance to exhibit their work in the Bistro. We received some great work of varied and talented folk, but Fenner’s was the firm favourite.

His exhibition ‘Hotel’ evokes memories of a Balearic/French Riviera holiday and an over whelming sense of calm, something we feel to be representative of the ambiance we strive for in our hotel. His work will adorn our walls for the foreseeable future, and as our roof provides home to our guests, the walls provide guest to Fenner’s art.

The main aspects that attracted us to his work are the contemporary angles and focus of the subjects he chose to paint, often finding beauty from obscure perspectives. Not to mention the vivid blues, and turquioses that contrast harmoniously with our terracotta walls.

We really enjoy his work and hope you will too!

Where is the Love? Well…

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

It’s been all change here at Urban Beach over the last few months. We’ve popped on some new glad rags, grabbed a new head chef and invested some time, money and passion back into our much loved hotel, restaurant and general hot spot for groovy times. We’ve invested 50k inside and out, and we’d love to know what you think. Let us enlighten you on what we’ve been tinkering with.

The 'Secret Garden' in full Sunday Swing. It's where magical things happen.

Anyone who has been to visit will likely have had a hard time missing the fact we have a whole new roof, and a fantastic ‘Secret Garden’ to go with it. The roof has cost us £30,000, and has been a tremendous success. It lights up in the night time, protects us from the elements, and – best of all – is completely mechanised so there is minimal fuss for the staff and disruption for our lovely customers. We can now go between shelter and sunshine with the push of a button, which is a sheer delight in the unpredictable climate this year has shown us.  Moreover, the opening party was a huge success. People came from far and wide, filled themselves with chili con carne and soaked up the atmosphere and all round good cheer. Everybody ‘ooh’ed and ‘ah’ed  with unpredictable glee when the roof had its grand reveal, and the live music kept us jigging away till it was replaced by pleasing chatter the sound of people sipping good cocktails (yes, it’s a thing).

Head Barman Adam Haines, "I can hear them sipping my cocktails." Here pictured with his own personal supply of delicious whiskey.

As if that were not enough, we’ve also re-furbished a large portion of the bistro. It’s taken us a fair bit of time, and cost an additional 20,00k but we feel it’s a worthwhile investment. Our much loved hotel attracts a loyal clientele who seem to cherish the place as much as we do. For new clients  too, its wonderful to be able to show off our fabulous place with renewed energy and pride. Owner Mark Cribb enthuses that, “After 8 years of being open we’ve taken the opportunity to re-invest some of our customers money back into the place we, and hopefully they, love.” He’s gone for some funky designs too! You can see some great examples of them by following this link: www.instagram.com/loveurbanbmth

The change has been quite prolific, although hopefully we haven’t lost anything of our homely surfer chic. There are some chickens on the furniture, as well as pretty Moroccan style permeating the overall vibe. For anyone who has passed by over the last few weeks, that may have seen the place looking like this:

Urban Beach's take on 'Modern Art'

If you were to visit now, you might find something looking a little more graceful, like this:

Urban Beach's Take on 'Nice Places To Actually Sit'

Pretty cool huh? We sincerely hope you agree. However, owner Mark has stressed the importance of your feedback. This is all for the enjoyment of you after all, our valued guests, and made possible by your coming to see us. We’d love to know how you feel about any of the new changes we’ve got going on. All the best and tonnes of love,

Dorset Day Delights; Dairy and Delicious

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

Tomorrow 21st June is Dorset Day! In honour of our wonderful home county we shall be showcasing some of the finest produce available in the WORLD, made right here. We’ll also be throwing in a few special ‘Urban Beach’ adaptations for your pleasure… Naturally of course.

Pictured From Left To Right: Barbers 1833 Cheddar (World Cheese Award Champion 2012), Francis Cheese ('Best New Cheese 2012' British Cheese Awards), Dorset Apple Cake ('Real Good Cake', Urban Beach Staff Secret Munching 2013), and Black Cow Vodka (See below...)

First up lets talk about Vodka. Its a strange place to begin when you think about Dorset, but you’d be surprised. AND it links in with the cheese. That’s right, the cheese. This is because the magnificent ‘Black Cow Vodka’  is the world’s first pure milk vodka, made entirely from the milk of grass grazed cows and nothing else. A dairy farmer named Jason Barber from West Dorset came up with the idea as a way of diversifying his produce. And from this basic idea he created something truly brilliant. Fresh whole milk makes an exceptionally smooth vodka with a unique creamy character. This might strange like a strange idea to some, but this really is a fantastic, unique spirit.

You can enjoy it straight, or experiment with our limited edition ‘Dorset Bloody Mary’ made with Dorset cherry tomato gazpacho, blended with fresh coriander and cucumber (plus special guests). Head Bartender Adam is aiming for a clever, fragrant take on the cocktail – although you can still add in the spice if you need!

______

Incidentally Black Cow Vodka is made from the same milk that is used to make Barber’s 1833 cheddar (also pictured above), winner of the World Cheese Awards Cheddar Trophy 2012. You can enjoy this as part of a fantastic Dorset Cheese Board tomorrow, which will also feature ‘Francis’, a semi soft cows cheese named the best new cheese of 2012, and ‘Burwood Bole’ with its creamy texture and sweet nuttiness.

[Extra bit of info - www.blackcow.co.uk explains - "The milk is separated into curds and whey. The curds are used to make cheese, the whey is fermented into a beer using a special yeast that converts the milk sugar into alcohol. This milk beer is then distilled and treated to our secret blending process. The vodka is then triple filtered and finished, before being hand bottled."]

______

Just in case that weren’t quite enough we will also be offering a sumptuous Dorset Apple Cake (of course!) and and two fantastic local ales.  The Dorset Brewing Company and The Isle of Purbeck Brewery beers are mainstays at our bar because of their consistent high quality, and our great fortune in having them so close by. (For more info visit – http://www.dorsetbreweries.com.)

We’re taking Dorset Day as an opportunity to show off a range of quality produce we already enjoy. The coastline, countryside and people make it a wonderful place to live, and there are clear signs that there’s lots of great stuff going on agriculturally too. If you are interested, Dorset Community Foundation is promoting the day as a chance to be thankful and give something back to the community through charity or action. You can visit their page for more information here – http://www.dorsetcommunityaction.org.uk/news/do-it-dorset-day-21st-june.

Pop in and see us if you can, we’re looking forward to it!

Lots of love,

Food Festival Funtastic

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Christchurch Food Festival is less than a week away! Anyone that has been before will know what a massive event this is for the local community, and on the wider UK food calendar. It is well known for bringing all types of people together in a wonderful atmosphere of education and celebration of food culture and talent. We are lucky to be able to bring Urban Beach’s unique brand of relaxed, accessible cuisine with touches of passion and innovation to the event. We plan to fill tums, put grins on faces and hopefully spark up conversation over a tasty beverage or two.

[Have you heard about our recent Award of ‘3* Sustainability from Raymond Blanc’s Sustainable Restaurant Association’?]

We will be attending the festival on the 11th and 12th of May with our very own stall, designed and built by manager Chris and Barman Rich. We’ll be bringing with us an array of savory pasties, sweet treats, specially selected cocktails, local ales (from The Dorset Brewing Company and Sunny Republic), non-alcoholic beverages and vegetarian and gluten free food options. There is also going to be an appearance of our award winning Bloody Mary for the Sunday morning, coupled with breakfast and veggie breakfast puff pastries. Mmm. What was I talking about?

Yes, breakfast. No. More on that later – see What We’re Bringing (below). Christchurch Food and Wine Festival, to give it its proper title, is now in its 13th year, having originally begun as a celebration of the new Millennium. It secured its place on the calendar by continually being so well received by the community. Patron Chef Lesley Waters, as seen on Ready Steady Cook and currently featured on This Morning, is one of many celebrity faces the event has attracted over its history. Others include Anton Edelman, James Martin, Gary Rhodes and Brian Turner. There is also an international food market, free entertainment and even a ‘Kids Kitchen’ to help get the little ones interested in what they eat and where it comes from. You can see why we’re a little bit excited – for more information on the history of the festival and what to expect please visit here.

This year the festival will run from the 10th – 19th May, with more than one hundred stalls taking up the pedestrianised high street and a majority of Christchurch town centre, including the lovely Saxon Square.

What We’re Bringing

As well as our sweet selves we will also be bringing the following:

Savories -  Lamb/Beef/Feta and Walnut Pasties, Lamb/Pork Sausage Rolls, and an extra secret veggie option.

Sweets – Wait for it… Almond croissants, brownies, blondies, millionaire’s shortbread, muffins, carrot cake, chocolate fudge cake, ‘Origin’ coffee cake, gingerbread men, cookies And cupcakes to match the cocktails.

Cocktails – Peach Julep, Sweet Tea Bourbon (includes blueberries) and Kwai Pepper Daiquiri (includes muddled bell pepper… intriguing).

Also in attendance will be our world famous ‘Old Jon’s Spiced Rum’, made in house with a carefully selected balance of ingredients. It’s said to produce magical powers in the drinker, but we’ve mostly found that people just prefer it to other rums.

Non-alcoholic beverages will include delicious ginger beer and a range of refreshing homemade lemonades including rhubarb (from the farm), ginger (made from homemade syrup) and mint.

We are so looking forward to this! With our stall, we are also aiming to give people a place to relax and enjoy these goodies in a warm, welcoming environment. Manager Chris has been keeping his plans top secret, but we are trusting him not to pull a Mr. Burns on us – ‘The Spruce Moose’

**

Not only do we love a good festival here at ‘Urban’ but we are also passionate about food and drink. The fact that one of the UK’s premier events on the food calendar is only a stone’s throw away is a wonderful opportunity. Remember we will be popping along with our own stall on the 11th and 12th of May. The precise location is as yet undisclosed, but we promise to make it something special. All are welcome, so please come and pay us a visit!

Love From,

Urban Beach xx

Sustainability Champions!

Monday, April 8th, 2013

We’ve just won a rather prestigious award! Check out this lovely blurb:

“A sustainable restaurant demonstrates responsible sourcing and best kitchen practice delivered by well trained staff using high-performing resource-efficient equipment and following good waste management policies. It is only with this holistic approach to the environmental, economic and social impacts of their business that the restaurant can be considered truly sustainable.”

Pretty swish. These words come from the most recent edition of the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s Guide to Sustainable Kitchens. Just under two weeks ago they gave us their highest possible rating of 3 Stars, and we are elated!  This makes us one of only two restaurants in Bournemouth to be presented with the award, which is of growing importance nationwide. Allow us to elaborate:

The SRA, headed by president Raymond Blanc, is a non-profit organization driven by a passion to see the restaurant industry look after the environment, its staff, customers and the local community. They asses and advise restaurants and hotels like ourselves on fourteen key focus areas, illustrated beautifully below:

You can check out the SRA’s home page here – http://www.thesra.org/

As you can see they weren’t joking when they used the word ‘holistic’. There’s a lot to take into consideration! That is why we put so much effort into not just into sourcing and preparing our food, but also how we run things and treat the world around us as we do it. It is why we use biodegradable bin bags for our food waste (it can be used as compost and contribute to renewable energy resources). It’s also why Head Barman Adam won’t make a strawberry daiquiri most of the year round (see ‘Did you know’), and why manager Helen threatens to take us running with her if we use too much water in the kitchen!

**Did you know…
- A third of the European Union’s greenhouse gasses emissions are food related.

- This is largely because of import/export carbon emissions.

- BUT some local food can actually be worse for the environment. If it’s grown out of season in greenhouses, or kept for too long in fridges which drain oodles of energy.**

Those of you familiar with our bistro will likely already know that we ensure that as much as food as possible is sourced locally and in season, or where possible from our very own farm! We are hoping very soon to take some customers along with us for a visit to the farm to sample some of the produce, and enjoy an old fashioned barbeque as soon as the weather capitulates to our needs. Of course, our fish is always responsibly sourced as well; in season and from sustainable sources. We do not buy fish from the fish to avoid list www.fishonline.org and we only use Marine Stewardship Council fish in our fish and chips and fish cakes recipes.

Whilst we are incredibly excited to have received this award (we could even shout it from the *ahem* NEW ROOFTOP), the best part is that it is an amazing incentive to keep pushing on and tackling new challenges. Sustainability is an ongoing battle and an area of fundamental importance. We are in fact taking it so seriously that we have taken on our very own ‘personal sustainability expert account manager’. That’s right, they are so important they got a title with more syllables than you can count on your eco friendly fingers,

Here’s to the very lovely Mother Nature,

Love,
Urban Beach xx

P.S. If you would like some more information about our sustainability endeavours please visit our relevant webpage Here.

Alternatively,  feel free to ‘Get in Touch’ or pop by anytime.

Boscombe’s Countdown to Christmas

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Boscombe's Countdown to Christmas!

Join in with Boscombe’s ‘Countdown to Christmas’ on Saturday December 1st 2012, courtesy of our friends at the Coastal BID (www.coastalbid.co.uk/)

Head down to the Sovereign Shopping Centre where from 10am – 4pm, you’ll be able to keep the kids entertained with face painting and a host of children’s entertainers. Prepare to be amazed by magic tricks and balloon modelling too! Between 2pm – 4pm the adults will also be treated to some timeless classics from the 50s and 60s.

The Precinct comes fully alive in the afternoon as a series of entertainers will take to the stage (2pm – 5pm), offering jazz, storytelling, dance displays, a Punch and Judy show, juggling elves and angels on stilts!

As the natural light begins to fade, make your way to Boscombe seafront for a display from ‘FLAME’ the amazing flame thrower, before heading to see our little sister Urban Reef! Cosy up on the Reef deck, grab a blanket and tuck into a hog roast, sup on a glass of mulled wine and enjoy some fantastic live music from the ‘Luke Adams band’ (5.30pm) who will be playing on the balcony out towards the sea – dance and sing along to a host of modern covers and some Christmassy tunes.

And to end your day grab a glow stick and join in with the countdown to the grand finale – the fireworks at around 6.15pm. If you’ve done all of that, you’ll be truly ready to welcome in the festive season in style.

Love the Urban Beach crew. Xx

Urban Reef’s autumn offers!

Friday, October 19th, 2012

All cosy at the Urban Reef

Autumn is now upon us and we have a couple of great offers and ideas that we wanted to share with you from our little sister Urban Reef! www.urbanreef.com

If you’re staying with us and would like to make the most of any of these just let us know and we’ll reserve a table for you.

Two For One Mains – Every Wednesday night

All you need to do is book for a meal with Urban Reef on a Wednesday evening anytime from 6pm and you’ll get two for one on main courses. Anything you like from the ‘à la Carte’ menu or the specials board. Cheapest main free – pretty obviously ;-)

Urban Reef Wine Club – ‘Bring your own’ every Thursday*

Many of you probably have a great bottle of wine sat at home which you’ve been waiting for a special occasion to crack it open. Well team up with the Urban Reef crew! They’ll make the food and you bring the wine. No corkage charge and they’ll open it for you, supply the glasses, pour the wine and will even do the washing up! They might ask you for a little taste so they can suggest a great dish to accompany your food – but heh, it’s all about working together right!

So get that Châteauneuf-du-Pape off the shelf, give it a dust off and bring it down. They’ll get a pici of you with your bottle to go on the Urban Facebook page, so everyone starts talking about it.

*A tiny little bit of small print: The wine club only applies to the Urban Reef restaurant when you have a meal over lunch or dinner. Only applies to wine, no bringing your own bottle of Vodka and a straw ;) Just one bottle of wine per two people – come as a table of four and bring two bottles, no problem!

A little extra for a Thursday night!

If you’re making the most of the wine club on a Thursday evening, you can enjoy a little something extra too! At 7pm and 10pm we’ll be offering a shuttle service from Urban Beach to the Urban Reef and back again – we don’t want you to ruin your hair ;-) – all you need to do is let us know if you want to make the most of this offer and we’ll get it sorted for you. It’ll be a shuttle taxi going back and forth at those specific times, so please bear with us if you have to wait a couple of minutes on a busy evening. Saves paying for car park!

So there you have it. A few little gems for this autumn and they’ll be running throughout October and November 2012.
