Introducing ‘small plates’ to the New Urban Reef Lunch Menu!

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015

Urban Reef is a funky Bournemouth cafe by day, offering fresh, local and seasonal produce. Our exciting new lunch menu offers a choice of small plates that can be enjoyed on their own or combined to make a delicious meal for sharing. A selection of favourite meat, fish and veg dishes has been joined on the menu by some new ones to try.

What’s new about the lunch menu?

Our chefs use the most amazing seasonal produce available in the local area in their dishes. Mussels, an Urban Reef favourite in the summer months, are in their prime at this time of year – bigger and tastier due to the choppier waters and stronger sea currents from October to March.

How does the menu reflect Urban Reef?

Everything we grow on the Urban Farm we use in our restaurants. We also work closely with passionate local suppliers to make sure the freshest, local organic ingredients are used in Urban Reef dishes. The new lunch menu reflects this, focusing on seasonal produce that is sourced from local people that grow, catch or produce it. The meat comes from Springfields Butchers in Poole, fish from local day boats and cheese, vegetables and wine are all sourced from small, local businesses in Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire.

How was the new lunch menu created?

The new lunch menu was lovingly created by the Head Chef at Urban Reef working with Chef Dean, Group Executive Chef for Urban Guild. We’ve already had some great feedback from you since launching at the beginning of December.

The new lunch menu was designed to reflect the relaxed social style of our Bournemouth seafront café and our ‘small plates’, little dishes of meat, fish and vegetables can be ordered on their own or in a combination, and are deliciously satisfying either way.

To learn more about the new lunch menu or to book a table at Urban Reef, please call us on 01202 443960 or book online.

What is the Hug Club?

The Hug Club Card guarantees a hug every time you visit us. (Not really – although we do love hugs). It’s a loyalty card, which represents the exchange of a “thank you” to you for being a loyal customer at any of our venues: Urban Reef, Urban Beach and Jenkins & Sons. Read on to discover how we’d like to thank you for loving our seafront restaurant in Bournemouth…

One of the benefits of the Hug Club card is the exclusive stuff guaranteed to put a smile on your face. We thought we’d kick this off in style with three – well why not?

So bring your Hug Club card with you to our award-winning Bournemouth restaurant, Urban Reef, between now and the end of November and you can enjoy the following:

2 for 1 Main Meals on Monday

King’s Park Primary get ‘seasonal’ at Urban Reef

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Head Chef Janusz with Urban Owner Mark Cribb

Over 60 pupils from King’s Park Primary School paid a visit to us recently to learn all about ‘seasonality’, where certain fruit and veg comes from and to have the opportunity to design a dish to appear on our ‘specials’ menu!

The children received a talk from our Urban owner, Mark Cribb, who is passionate about produce. So much so that Mark has even purchased a piece of land out in Sopley, the New Forest called the ‘Urban Farm’, where he grows fruit and veg to supply both us and our brother venue, The Urban Beach.

Mark talked to the group about the abundance of fruit, veg and fish that is available at this time of year in England, some of it right here on our very own doorsteps. He, along with the help of our Head Chef Janusz, (who has worked in a variety of world renowned restaurants including, Nobu, Gordon Ramsay’s Maze and Heston’s Fat Duck), showcased a host of produce which had been handpicked from the Urban Farm. Janusz then explained how some of these ingredients are cooked and how they get incorporated into various dishes.

The children were also invited to try some of the food such as; pumpkin & swede cakes, poached pears, Jerusalem artichoke and chocolate beetroot cake to name just a few!

The children will now go back to their school and in teams will be asked to come up with a seasonal starter, main and dessert. In a couple of weeks time Mark and Janusz will listen to some presentations from the children and will choose their favourite dishes. The top ones will appear on the Urban Reef ‘specials’ menu for a weekend at the end of November and the children will get to see the chefs cooking their dishes in the kitchen.

We’ll keep you posted on what the children come up with and hope that you’ll all come down to check out what ends up on our specials board!

Love the Urbans. Xx

Well we thought we should give you the heads up that some of the Urban Beach crew have been taking their training very seriously with conker matches on a daily basis ;)

Meeting Mark Diacono

The Urban Farm!

We haven’t updated our blog with any Urban Farm info in a little while (we’re ever so sorry). Its just as it had been raining non-stop for what seems like forever, much of our fruit and veg took a fair amount of a battering due to over-flooding, so we didn’t have too much to write about!

However, the sun is now shining his little face off, so we thought we’d get back into the swing of it. Plus we wanted to fill you in about a recent meeting of ours with a wonderful chap, Mark Diacono.

Many of you probably already know, but for those who don’t, Mark Diacono is the ex-head gardener of River Cottage. The brainchild of Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall.

Mark also runs ‘Otter Farm’ a 17 acre farm down in Devon. Otter Farm is the UK’s only climate change farm. It’s home to lots of lovely stuff – dwarf kiwis, orchards of olives, peaches, almonds, chocolate vine, Szechuan pepper, apricots and Japanese wineberries – to name just a few. Mark also has a forest garden, a vineyard and a perennial garden.

We were lucky enough to be introduced to Mark through our friend Tim Sanders from Discover Dorset, have a little look here www.discoverdorset.co.uk/ at what Tim does (we’ve been on one of Tim’s Discover Dorset Tours and would highly recommend it!). After our introduction to Mark via Tim, we invited Mark to come and see what we’re all about! So he popped to see us for a day visit.

Mark seemed pretty excited about the Urban Farm, our little piece of land out in Sopley the New Forest, and the opportunities that it provides us with – we plant the seeds, they grow and flourish, we harvest the crop, bring it into our kitchen and plate it up for our customers. We get our customers enthused with our story and they go on to spread the word about the importance of ‘growing your own’.

After having a little look around Mark suggested we should extend our piece of land. We had a chat about a potential acre of vineyard to start growing our own grapes for wines –the staff got excited at the thought of this! We then got thinking about other things we could start to grow out there, such as planting an apple orchard to be able to produce our own cider, plus growing some other more high value crops. We also chatted to Mark about some of the stuff people don’t usually eat, such as the flowers from broad beans – we’re not going mad, it actually adds another dimension to eat certain flowers as part of your food.

Alas, our time with Mark came to end, but we felt there is so much more that we’d love to be able to learn from him and discuss with him, so we’re planning to invite him back for a BBQ at some point. We’ll pick some veg from the Urban Farm and enlist his help to cook it on the barbie.

If you want to find out more about Mark, you can have a little look at his website: www.otterfarm.co.uk and you can follow him on Twitter ‘@markdoc’ He’s a great guy, so we’d recommend you check out what he’s up to.
