Urban 'Home guard' potatoes

Our last ‘Urban farm’ blog was over a month ago (my how time flies!) so we thought we’d better blog again as things have come on quite a lot at our little piece of land in Sopley. So much so in fact, that we have now taken our first harvest!

A few of us urbanites brought back a host of goodies the other day including: ‘red duke’ potatoes, ‘home guard’ potatoes, red beetroot and white beetroot (yes, that’s right, white beetroot! There is such a thing and it’s proper tasty). We also had our first rhubarb crop directly from the hotel veggie and herb garden.

Our talented chefs are now incoroporating these bits into our Urban dishes, so keep an eye on the specials boards!

We’ve got heaps of other stuff planted and we should get more tasty treats appearing throughout the summer and autumn so we will sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, if you want to know more just ask the team when you come in as we are very passionate about growing our own and will be very happy to chat to you about it all for hours! ;)

In fact we’re so passionate, we even made our own video of our last visit. Check it out!http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150283935236233&oid=188761942097&comments

Room three at Urban Beach

And breathe! It has been a rather hectic time for us Urban folk over the past week following our TV debut on Channel 4’s ‘Four in a Bed’ AKA, FIAB, but we’re not complaining as it was all good fun. We also had some fantastically, wonderfully lovely comments from you guys so it was all worth it!

The spotlight was really on our little brother, Urban Beach, but we got a few mentions too :)

For those of you that are not sure what we’re going on about, FIAB is basically a programme where four B&B/small hotel owners all take it in turns to stay at each other’s venues. At the end of each stay everyone says how much they would have paid to stay overnight against how much the room really cost – simple.

For those of you that haven’t seen it yet, scroll down to the last paragraph now as we are going to give away the ending …

To everyone else who did see it, we’re OK about not winning – we really truly are, in fact we were pretty sure we wouldn’t win in the ‘B&B’ category as Urban Beach is clearly top end due to its prices. Each property shown was really targeted at different markets, no better, no worse, just different, so it was just important to us Urban folk to come across as doing the best at what we do in our area to the 2-3 million viewers (whoa!) who watched.

We had a good few laughs, met some wonderful people with some great venues, got some great PR and we’re all going to meet up again in Blackpool later this year for a reunion!

So there you have it, come in and see us or our relatives at Urban Beach to find out what all the fuss is about. We’d love to see you.

If you missed any of it, then you’ll be able to catch-up on 4oD by clicking here:

Join them for some traditional Spanish food and a bit of Urban baked bread all for a tenner.

Keep an eye on the ‘Beach’ specials board as each week head chef Carl will decide whether to cook meat or fish paella!

The alternative 'Urban Hobana'

Well summer showed its face at the weekend and while the sun seems to have disappeared for now, we’re sure it’ll be back again soon. So to get you feeling all summery, we’d like to introduce you to a couple of our new drinks!

We are now stocking Rekorderlig cider from Sweden, choosing the original apple and the wild berries flavours, which seem to have been flying out from behind the bar. Served in a tall glass with ice and fruit, we reckon you’ll have a very refreshing experience. Keep an eye out over the Wimbledon season (Monday June 20thSunday July 3rd) as we’ll also be serving the strawberry & lime flavour and the Kiwi flavour will be making an appearance soon too! Let us know what you think ;)

We’ve also come up with an alternative breakfast drink, the ‘Urban Hobana’. A mix of bananas, local honey, fresh lemon juice and some milk. You can choose to have it with a dash of cinnamon too, or have some cinnamon and oats on the side and mix as you wish! Who said breakfast was boring?

So there you have it, keep coming to see and we’ll keep coming up with new and exciting drinks.

(*Coming soon, our Wimbledon special!)
