King’s Park Primary get ‘seasonal’ at Urban Reef

Head Chef Janusz with Urban Owner Mark Cribb

Over 60 pupils from King’s Park Primary School paid a visit to us recently to learn all about ‘seasonality’, where certain fruit and veg comes from and to have the opportunity to design a dish to appear on our ‘specials’ menu!

The children received a talk from our Urban owner, Mark Cribb, who is passionate about produce. So much so that Mark has even purchased a piece of land out in Sopley, the New Forest called the ‘Urban Farm’, where he grows fruit and veg to supply both us and our brother venue, The Urban Beach.

Mark talked to the group about the abundance of fruit, veg and fish that is available at this time of year in England, some of it right here on our very own doorsteps. He, along with the help of our Head Chef Janusz, (who has worked in a variety of world renowned restaurants including, Nobu, Gordon Ramsay’s Maze and Heston’s Fat Duck), showcased a host of produce which had been handpicked from the Urban Farm. Janusz then explained how some of these ingredients are cooked and how they get incorporated into various dishes.

The children were also invited to try some of the food such as; pumpkin & swede cakes, poached pears, Jerusalem artichoke and chocolate beetroot cake to name just a few!

The children will now go back to their school and in teams will be asked to come up with a seasonal starter, main and dessert. In a couple of weeks time Mark and Janusz will listen to some presentations from the children and will choose their favourite dishes. The top ones will appear on the Urban Reef ‘specials’ menu for a weekend at the end of November and the children will get to see the chefs cooking their dishes in the kitchen.

We’ll keep you posted on what the children come up with and hope that you’ll all come down to check out what ends up on our specials board!

Love the Urbans. Xx
