Building Urban Reef's new balcony

Building Urban Reef's new balcony

Welcome to the wonderful month of May. Don’t lose faith, stay positive, we are utterly convinced we’re due a heat wave soon. We’ve had a chat with the strawberries and broad beans at the Urban farm and they assure us nature knows best and all will be well in the end.

Since the last newsletter we have completed your new balcony on the front of the restaurant. We’re super excited about this. You can see how we did it in photos here and now come down and sit on the real thing. So many of you had asked us to do this and now when you’re sat up there looking over the pier to Sandbanks and all the way down to Hengistbury Head we know you are going to love it. We have a glass sliding wall being installed under the balcony in June which will also protect you from the elements down in the bar. Now alas we have the challenge of paying our wonderful builders off so if you’re planning on going out for breakfast, lunch or dinner anytime soon please choose us and I promise we’ll be super grateful and will invest your money wisely.

Terry Denis, our new bar manager

Terry Denis, our new bar manager

We thought autumn was coming but we were wrong, the weather has been AMAZING!!! Who’d have thought we’d still be firmly in our flip flops mid October? With the glorious weather we have been lucky enough to be as busy as we have been over the summer months.

This month has seen the launch of our new café and restaurant menus. We’d very much welcome your thoughts and feedback – is there anything that you were hoping see or a dish that you just love?

We wanted to take the opportunity to let you know about our friends at the Dorset Wildlife Trust who are running the ‘Great Dorset Seafood Campaign’, a campaign to encourage a return to a healthy and productive marine environment by: helping consumers make the right choice of seafood, encouraging retailers and restaurants to source from low impact fishing methods and well managed stocks and providing information on the way the marine species are caught in Dorset. We think the work they are doing is fantastic and to find out more about them you can visit:www.greatdorsetseafood.org.uk

As to the rest of our newsletter, this is what we have going on. You can read about all sorts in the world of Urban over ‘The Next 30 days’, and we have two fantastic charities in ‘Share the love’ – two wonderful people are supporting The Jigsaw Appeal and Bone Cancer Research. Our ‘Meet the team’ is a chap called Terry Denis and our ‘Meet a Customer’ is a regular Urbanite, Clare Belmont. Have a go at making a tasty main dish courtesy of head chef Carl in ‘What’s in your tummy’ and our ‘Ooh a competition’ will go off with a bit of a bang! October’s ‘Bestest friends’ are our HR helpers at Real and to finish for the month we have an Urban Praline in ‘Hiccup’ – it’s yummy.

September:

Katie's flapjacks!

Katie's flapjacks!

Well we’ve reached the month of September where the leaves on the trees are just thinking about getting ready for their autumnal change, flip flops are being replaced with wellies, the morning air is just a smidgen crisper and some new produce is sprouting out of the ground. We love a change in season and all the new wonderful culinary goodies that it gives us :-)

If you’ve been on our website recently, you might have noticed we now have our very own Urban Reef video – a promotional video showcasing all that is Urban. For those of you that haven’t had a look yet click here. We’d love to know what you think of it, so do get in touch in you have any feedback.

We’re also very excited this month to let you know that we have a new section in our newsletter, ‘Share the love’. Basically, we were starting to get daily requests from charities and local organisations asking us to help them out by providing a meal for two, raffle prize etc… and while we love ‘sharing some Urban love’, we were finding our approach a little haphazard! So we had a think about it and have come up with a way to make the selection process fair for everyone that approaches us.

In ‘Share the love’ we will feature two charities per month that have asked for our help. You’ll be able to read a little bit of blurb about each and we’ll also include their contact details so if you want to get in touch with them you can. We’ll then ask you, our lovely readers, to vote for which charity you’d like us to support for the month and we’ll give the chosen charity a ‘meal for two’ to give away as raffle prize. So there you have it! This month we are featuring the ‘Tibet Culture Trust’ and ‘Diverse Abilities Plus’.

As to the rest of the newsletter, this is what we have in-store for you! We start with ‘The next 30 days’, we’ll then have our new charity section, closely followed by ‘Meet the Team’ – this month we feature new Head Chef, Carl McCann. Our ‘Meet a Customers’ are Abi and Adam Veitch, two big lovers of Urban and our ‘What’s in your tummy’ is one for all those with a sweet tooth! Our ‘Oooh a competition’ has a Halloween theme and our ‘Bestest friend’ for this month is a lovely chap called Gauthier, he’s a French champagne seller. To end this month’s newsletter our ‘Hiccup’ is not one for the fainthearted, have a go at making ‘Nixon’s Naughty Citrus’.

Beach Life Wines

Yep, get ya flip flops out and get yourselves down the beach to make the most of every single sunny day you see!

In ‘Meet a customer’, you can read about Geraldine and David Mitchell, two regular Urbanites and our baker Kay has provided us with a recipe for this month’s, ‘What’s in your tummy’. According to the clever weather bods we’ve had one of the hottest Aprils in a rather long time. We actually think it has been the hottest April on record in the history of the whole world ;) and we really hope this weather lasts into the lovely month of May.

This weekend we had our busiest Bank Holiday weekend ever! We saw thousands of lovely customers come through our doors, many trying out our bright and colourful chairs on our decking. There were BBQ’s galore and the fab Jon Cotton sung some merry songs for everyone.

March/April:

Nigel Popperwell (AKA Popps)

Nigel Popperwell (AKA Popps)

Welcome to our, ‘goodbye winter, hello spring’ newsletter.

The past few days have been amazing! and while there is still a bit of a nip in the air, it’s great to see the sun shining. People are getting out and about, sunnies glued firmly to their heads, and we even saw a few little toes poking out from underneath our tables as people donned their flip flops. ‘Twas a lovely sight.

We had a great turnout for our Pie and Ale event on Friday March 25th. The evening, which we held in association with one of our marvellous suppliers, Palmers Brewery, saw over 200 people joining us for a pint of ale (or two!) and a slice of pie – yum. This was then followed by a fab night on the Sunday with resident musician, Jon Cotton.

So, what do we have in store for you in this month’s newsletter? Well, we give you an introduction to our new Executive Chef, Nigel Popperwell in ‘Meet the team’ (feel free to call him Popps if you should see him – we do!) In ‘Meet a customer’ we’ll give you an introduction to Maureen and John, a very lovely couple who just can’t seem to get enough of us. In ‘What’s in your tummy’ we have a scrumptious cupcake recipe from our in-house baker, Kay, and to tie-in with April Fool’s Day; we have an appropriately themed competition in ‘Oooh a competition’. We are now serving Estrella Damm on the premises – the oh so sunny Barcelona-brewed beer – so you’ll be able to find out more on that in our ‘Bestest friends’ and our ‘Hiccup’ for this month is called, ‘Spring in your step!’
